The pupil premium was introduced by the government in April 2011.  It is additional funding given to schools to help ensure that all children have the same opportunities to succeed, particularly those who may face barriers to learning. It is provided for pupils who are eligible for free school meals now or have been at any point in the last six years, children who are or have been in care, and children with parents in the armed forces. Schools use this funding to support learning and wellbeing—such as through extra teaching, targeted interventions, mentoring, enrichment activities, and resources—so that every child can achieve their full potential.
